The Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros (Certificate of Proficiency in Portuguese for Foreigners – Celpe-Bras)
is granted to foreigners whose performance was considered satisfactory in a standardized Portuguese test, developed by the Ministry of Education.
The test is administered in both Brazil and other countries with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Celpe-Bras is internationally accepted by companies and educational institutions as a certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language and, in Brazil, it is demanded by universities for admission to undergraduate courses and graduate programs.
Awarded by MEC, Celpe-Bras is the only Brazilian certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign language that is officially acknowledged. It is granted in four levels: intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and upper advanced. The first test was administered in 1998.
Since the 2nd semester of 2009, the “Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira” (Brazilian institute for Studies and Researches on Education – Inep) is responsible for the test.
